Carn Marth Trust. Autumn 2007.
Our AGM in October this year was a bit different than usual in that we had an excellent talk with slides to round off the usual necessary, but lets face it rather boring, business of the evening. Perhaps boring is coming it a bit too strong, unexciting perhaps. We do have a new Chairman though. Alex Hogg is still engaged in a Turtle Conservation Project in the Eastern Mediterranean and has to bow out, many thanks to him for his input. We now have David Hodgson, who also gave the slide show which made such a stimulating impression on us all. He showed us just how valuable the remnants of Lowland Heath on Carn Marth were and the exciting possibilities should we be fortunate enough to win the sizeable grant that was applied for recently. If successful it will enable us to call on the services of a professional to carry out a Bracken clearance program on the land surrounding Cathedral/Martin’s Quarry.
Back in August we had what was our 21 annual performance in the Open Air Theatre Quarry, by Miracle Theatre again this year. Their players put on ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, with Miracle’s very own take on Will Shakespeare’s classic love story. The weather held and people came in their hundreds to a thoroughly enjoyable evening. These annual performances are quite hard work to organise for all concerned, the Players and CMT’s volunteers alike. But when we have an evening like this year it is a win –win situation. The audience has a great evening out, the Miracle team enjoy it so much they promise to return next year, the Trust receives much needed funds, attracts new members and generally ‘waves the flag’.
Also waving the flag a bit was the timing of one of our regular litter picks to coincide with the Clean Cornwall Campaign in the second week of September. Much Letter was picked! Thanks to all who turned up.
Our own Newsletter will be coming out shortly and will expand on some of the news above. If you would like a copy please contact our Secretary. Copies can be sent on line, and of course doing it that way helps keep expenses down. There are still a couple of vacancies on our Committee, so if you feel like getting involved do get in touch, it could be an exciting year ahead. Similarly with membership, the more members we have the more we are spurred on to doing more to improve everyone’s enjoyment of Carn Marth. Membership is only £1! We are open to donations however modest, and they can be the subject of gift aid, it costs you nothing except a signature and so then the Chancellor has to fork out something! There isn’t a better offer around. All enquiries can receive a potted history of the Trust and how it started back in 1986 in order to prevent a million ton quarrying operation on the Carn. The Trust is committed to keeping Carn Marth freely open for all to enjoy, we look welcome any and all enquiries about joining in this ongoing and worthwhile project.
